A good friend opened my eyes to this marvel of movie magic, this stupendous scene of sound, this bodacious bag of buffalo--er--I'll just let you see for yourself. There are four episodes, so don't quit after the first one!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJ4T9CQA0UM

And one of me doing a fun boulder problem with wet feet consequences my friend Benny Bills and I found at Hueco Tanks. The music is actually my brother's original work and the video was produced and filmed by 'ole Benny himself:
Tomorrow I will hit the road for central Illinois to make good on that. It's been about six months since I've seen them and I miss them so much.

After spending a little more than a week at the Obed alone (man I love that place), making new friends and climbing new lines, I came back to Nashville to discover that Amanda misses life on the road. I consider her fully converted to dirtbag now. The plan worked perfectly. More news on this later.

For now though, the blog will be put away, and our adventures on the Great Magnet will turn back in to obscurity for a while. But who knows, someday a new adventure may fall into our laps and grace the screen of this humble blog.

Have a great end of 2011 everyone, thanks for reading, and be safe out there.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8892593399746605176.post-59205019325956530762011-12-07T10:19:00.000-08:002011-12-07T10:19:06.910-08:00Back in the Southeast!A great wind blew us back into the southeast and immediately upon arrival we went to bed. But then we woke up the next day and went straight to the Obed for some bouldering. Rains moved in and brought us back to Nashville for a couple of days. Stopped by Climb Nashville for some hangin' out with some familiar faces--man the people there are the best! If you live in Nashville and don't visit the gym you are missing out my friend!

Hopefully this weekend, the rain will clear and we will be back at the Obed.
What's not to like here?

We were fortunate to spend two days here in the amazing city of Flagstaff. There are not a whole lot of problems at Priest Draw, but the quality is amazing--and luckily the snow didn't bother us or the top outs too much.

Amanda took a few really cool shots with her fish eye lens, so enjoy her exposures.

We are leaving tomorrow morning for Sedona where I will attempt Mission to Mars. An 80 foot .12d sport route that I've wanted to do for a long time--and the last must do route of the trip.

Then--gasp--we will be heading down to El Paso to meet up with the lovely Annie Bills and her bearded wild man Benny for the culmination of our time on the road at the world famous Hueco Tanks. Expect lots of photos...until then.

It used to be I was the one that gave Amanda beta (beta: secret movement to solve a rock climb). Now I'm workin' the v6's while she is workin' the v9's!

Joe's Valley sandstone is world class, and Amanda is feeling the friction. With an onsight of a v7 that I couldn't lift my can off the ground, and several v5 onsights, and rippin' highballs with no guff. The woman is tickin' boulder problems like she has been climbing her whole life.

Makes me proud to see her rip it up like this. She has been climbing strong the whole trip, but ever since we got to Joe's, she has been climbing super strong.

I've been doing pretty well too, but that goes without saying...

Today we awoke to a light snow flurry, enjoyed it for a moment, then moved on to coffee and a library. We are in Castledale right now, with a little wi-fi to put up a few photos. Enjoy.

Kolob is a sector of Zion National Park that is accessed by Highway 15, a completely different entrance than the main Zion approach.

The south fork of Taylor Creek hosts some of the only sport climbs in Zion. Indeed if you read the literature they give you when you arrive it will state that there are 'no sport climbs in Zion'. Untrue.

There are not many, but there are a few of the most stunning lines I have ever climbed on. And they're long. Real long. I took 18 draws with me and when Amanda lowered me, our 80 meter rope was completely taught and I was a good forty feet or so away from the wall. Sick.

The routes were 130 to 150 feet long, I onsighted the five routes I tried within the three hours we were there. I was so impressed by the quality of the stone and how fun they were to climb. Lines of huecos led up the red sandstone cliff deep in the slot canyon. Time sorta flew by--I love long routes.

Since it was just the two of us, we couldn't take photos of the climbing, but we did get a few descriptive shots of the action after the fact.

(Google image search Namaste 5.12a and Huecos Rancheros 5.12c at Kolob Canyon for other folks' shots of the routes in action.)

We're spending the night in Cedar City this evening and then will be heading on to Joe's Valley in the morning.

Weather is perfect and we are ready to rip it up.

We probably won't be able to post many more blog entries until we leave Joe's Valley, but we will try.

VEGAS!We were just going to stop through Las Vegas.

Maybe stay a day and say hello to an old friend and his family (the family responsible for getting me to Nashville actually...he always says: "I can't believe you are still there!" What can I say, Nashville is a pretty sweet place to live.).

Then, we went to Red Rocks.

Then, Amanda's parents came to visit us.

Then, we all went back to Red Rocks for a couple of days.

So we actually stayed in Vegas a bit longer than expected. But you know, Vegas is a pretty cool place, my friend took us out to many delicious restaurants including the Lotus of Siam, which had some bangin' thai food.

And then, we left. And are currently in St. George enjoying some sport climbing at the local crags. I must say, the locals here are super friendly, inviting us to their homes for dinner and showers. We will be hitting a few more areas up before leaving, we have climbed three days and already have done more than 50 routes! The soft red sandstone is easy on the hands.

Hopefully, the Cathedral and Kolob Canyon in Zion will be as rewarding.

We are in the final leg of the journey already. I can't believe time has gone by so swiftly. We will be heading to Joe's Valley in central Utah next and then down through Arizona to Flagstaff and then wrapping up the trip in Sedona.

We expect to be back in the Nashville area sometime in December.

However, I am starting to miss the Obed...

I wanted to make a quick note that some of our readers have been wanting to hear less about the climbing and more about how we are doing. Even though we are on a roadtrip so obviously we are doing extremely well, we have decided to include a segment in this blog post that covers what other major pastimes are at play during our day: Eating food!

We have cooked tons of great and creative meals in Vanny White (we named the van), but have chosen one meal in particular to share with all of you...all 14 of you faithful blog readers--especially the one who didn't find the existing content enough.

Without further adieu, here is one from the vaults:

Red Cabbage Tempeh Wraps

1 head Red Cabbage
1 package Tempeh
Nutritional Yeast Flakes
Bragg's Liquid Aminos (we used the spritzer bottle)
1 cucumber (chopped)
Cherry tomatoes (halved)
Fresh Spinach
Pink Himalayan Sea Salt
Fresh Ground Pepper
Olive Oil

Cooking the Tempeh: Chop up that tempeh however you like it, we chopped it pretty good, looked like ground hamburger when we finished with it! Heat up some olive oil in a skillet, medium heat. Toss that tempeh in and once it starts to brown, spray it down with the Bragg's Liquid Aminos. Sprinkle some Nutritional Yeast Flakes on, stir, and spray it down again. Add salt and pepper to taste and before you finish, turn the heat up a little and see if you can't get it a bit crispy.

Take your Cabbage leaf, load it up with the spinach leaves, tempeh, chopped cucumber and halved cherry tomatoes, close the wrap and don't let it go till you finish that bad boy. Straws recommended so you don't have to let the wrap go with your hands to take a sip of your beverage. Since the cabbage has a mind of its own, it doesn't really keep it's 'wrapped' shape.

Enjoy!

Namely, Sky Rock. As it's name implies, the rock faces the sky, making it very difficult to locate.

This particular petroglyph site is kept hush-hush by the local rangers, and even trying to find directions on the internet proved impossible.

We were lucky enough to bump into a guy bouldering who was filming the rock and after inviting him to join us, he told us about it. After some other investigating, we located the rock which was quite magnificent.

Check it out!
When in fact, the clouds were a blessing, and the rains always came at the right time--when we were asleep. We've been bouldering at the Buttermilks, but hope to check out the Happy and Sad Boulders in the weeks to come.

Enjoy some photos!
The book was filled with interesting stories of China's history as well as subject covered in this old documentary. Quite an enjoyable read if you find yourself without a good book.

Our friends Kid and Marie Eve who offered us company, a place to hang, and a shower on more than one occasion lent us a shop vac to spruce up the van and Marie Eve even washed the outside of the van for us! Double Dang!

We then bid our friends farewell and commenced leaving the great country of Canada and headed south down the West Coast. Making it through customs quickly (it's interesting how much faster you get through with a beautiful young lady in the car) we made a much needed stop in Whole Foods Seattle to stock up on the supplies we depleted in Canada.

Then we filled up the van and hit the road to Klamath Beach. On the way, we were very impressed with the Oregon Coast, especially Astoria. Some of you may know that this is where the Goonies House is. And Yes, we did stop and check it out...I mean, come on, it was right off the road, it literally took five minutes! Maybe we took pictures too, and maybe I'll post them for you to see later. Kindergarten Cop was also shot there, but we didn't make the pilgrimage. We did however stop at this awesome breakfast shop that hooked it up with the Eggs Benedict (I'm slightly interested in the obviously dank crepery just down from where I'm currently typing this as well.).

Astoria also boasted many unique stores and art galleries nestled right on the water--one of them even had a Goonies Themed Section--Classic.

Then we drove a half hour down the street for Cannon Beach. Which some of you may recall was where the rocks jutting out of the water fit Mikey's Doubloon in the movie, The Goonies. Yep, we were there, and once again, maybe there are photos...

Finally arriving in Klamath, we hurried down for a short bouldering/exploring session of the famous Lost Rocks on the beach and made it back in time to watch the sun dip into the ocean. Marvelous.

That night, at around 1:50am, we were startled awake as some misfit broke out the window in the car next to us and stole a computer and camera from the vehicle. I feel bad for not getting out in my boxer shorts wielding the 'ole machete, but I figured it wasn't my place to get involved.

The following morning, the Yurok Tribe sent one of their police to the scene to investigate and told us that this is extremely common in the area and also telling us about having guns pulled on you if you go bouldering outside the designated zone set by the Yurok Tribe. Despite some harsh moods laid down in the situation, we risked staying another night to climb on the amazing boulders (photos soon), but luckily we were safeguarded by a large group of super nice Korean kids gambling and playing music in the parking lot all night.

We also met and climbed with a young man named Shawn from Oregon and his golden retriever, Abby. The four of us hiked the entire beach of Lost Rocks, bouldering on every sweet line we passed. This is possibly one of the most unique bouldering areas I have ever been too. Once we get the photos from the camera, we will post some more awesome shots of the bouldering and how the day went from completely clear to completely foggy.

We are now sitting in a coffee shop in Arcata, California, just down from said crepery that is just playing with my imagination.

Instead we aren't leaving until sometime next week.

We have been invited to a pig roast on Saturday (Amanda is so excited about that one...), so there's no way we can miss that! And on Monday, this cool kid from Vancouver Island has offered to climb Angel's Crest with him on the Chief. Angel's Crest is a 13 pitch traditional climb with several 5.10 pitches. Amanda will not be joining in on the fun, but we have a pair of binoculars so she can watch me poop my pants safely from the ground.

I'll try to take my small camera with me, but fair warning, they will not be quality photos, but it does have auto-focus, so even I shouldn't be able to mess that up.

Also, next week, the temperature is supposed to drop creating great conditions for some of the harder lines we have been attempting in the forest. Hopefully, we can wrap up some unfinished business in the forest and hit the road back to America, down the California coast's Highway 1 to Big Sur, and eventually the Yosemite Valley for a bit before settling down in Bishop California for a month or so for some more world class bouldering.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8892593399746605176.post-72672090967544809512011-08-23T14:43:00.000-07:002011-10-16T13:30:52.712-07:00The ForestSeems to me that we hit Squamish up at precisely the right time. Three solid weeks of no rain. I have no huge sends to report on, but Amanda on the other hand, has been crushing!

We have primarily been bouldering, but since it finally rained yesterday, we are heading to Checkamus Canyon today for some good 'ole fashioned bluff scalin'.

We were joined for a few days by Nashville natives, Jonathan Craig (all-around master of everything athletic) and Igor "I don't mind walking" Pusanov. We have also been hanging out with friends I met when I first came here (this is my fourth trip) back in 2003, which has been a lot of fun.

We should be leaving here within the next few days and starting our slow move toward Yosemite National Park via Highway 1 down the Californian Coast. We were going to ferry over to Vancouver Island for some sport climbing at Horne Lake, but we have decided to skip it since the Canadian Dollar is dominating our American Dollars ability to go very far up here.

Enjoy these photos that Amanda has taken!
Yes. Yes. We have arrived in beautiful British Columbia. More notably, in Squamish. Home to the gianormous granite monolith known as the Chief. And just below the Chief, hundreds of granite blocks nestled in the forest. We have been here nearly a week and have already run into many old friends who came back to Squampton in 2003--and never left!

On the way here though, we have a thorough history lesson in American Mining from tour guide extraordinaire, Shane Williams in Butte, Montana. As well as meeting up with the prestigious Dr. Mike Majerczyk in Seattle for an awesome dinner with plenty of laughs.

Getting used to the granite, we will most likely only stay here a few more weeks before ferrying over to Vancouver Island for some sport climbing at Horne Lake.

This is all for now, enjoy some photos!
Today we are leaving the dolomite paradise we have grown to love over the past three weeks and are moving on to Butte, Montana. This stop was not planned, but a very special friend is going to put us up for the night, the one and only, Mr. Shane Williams.

We should be in Squamish, B.C., within the week, and I know Amanda is ready to break in her new Organic crashpad on the boulders under the Stawamus Chief.

Besides bouldering, we will also be doing a little bit of sport climbing in Chekamus Canyon. One wall in mind is known as The Big Show, and I remember seeing it in 2003 and thinking how crazy it would be to have the ability to climb on this wall. It is huge and looks like a giant UFO crashed into earth! We will definitely be posting photos.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8892593399746605176.post-9496885153506518782011-07-29T09:26:00.000-07:002011-07-29T09:26:26.035-07:00Check this out #1Photog Extraordinare, Adam Bove, was in Ten Sleep and graced us with his presents. Check out the fruits of his (and our) labors here for shots of our day climbing at the Ark Sector. This guy knows his stuff. Enjoy!

Here we are standing atop the Ten Sleep Canyon, sector Ark to our right (Big thanks to Adam for his candid shot of us taking in the benevolent majesty that is the buttery goodness of Ten Sleep). This image was taken on a rest day when we spent five hours hiking the canyon searching for the Ark. Needless to say, when we came back the next day to climb, we knew right where to hike, and the long overhanging 5.12's sculpted by the rock gods themselves were ticked off faster than you can say 'Eat Beef'!

Our campsite is directly past my right wrist in the photo. Free camping, free water, and loose stock bumping into our van in the morning--paradise. The temps are perfect, seemingly dry and low 70's in the shade, and it has only rained once during the day since we arrived. The shade however completes the best part of Ten Sleep--most climbing sectors do not receive shade until after 2pm, so we have plenty of time to cook breakfast and chuck cow pies at each other--after they've hardened into organic frisbees thank you very much!

Make no mistake, though, the rangers have been making their rounds doing routine check ups and performing short surveys that will most likely end up with the Park Service installing toliets and charging for these amazing campsites. Better get while the gettin's good!

At first we weren't too impressed with the Big Horn Dolomite (apparently a close relative to limestone) of Ten Sleep Canyon, but then Dr. Jose prescribed us some of the steeper walls and we have been hooked. We will most likely be staying another week still before moving on.

Today for instance, is a rest day, and we are in the small town of Thermopolis. Home of the free 20 minute hot springs soak and the free showers! We were told some treaty with the Native Americans demanded the sulfer bath be free forever, so we are taking full advantage of only being an hour away.

Any way you cut it, Ten Sleep is definitely the dope shinto!
